Due to the nature of kitting out these specialist laboratories, Meridian Interiors worked closely with the Estates Team at the Open University, to ensure the correct specification to support the university’s equipment was used.
A dedicated Meridian site manager was on site, supported by the project management team, throughout the project, to ensure smooth running of the refurbishment, using Meridian’s tried and tested project management processes.
The project initially involved a large demolition phase and isolation of existing services.
The HVAC systems on this project were extensive and involved new air conditioning, fresh air systems and dedicated extraction systems to facilitate the various fume cabinets and safety cabinets that are deployed in the laboratories. New equipment was introduced into the existing plant room facility with the need for us to alter the roof to add additional extraction systems to accommodate the heat load in the plant room.
New partitioning walls were constructed with first fix services introduced before laboratory grade suspended ceilings were installed, with new LED lighting.
Once the floors were prepared, vinyl sheet safety flooring, with coved skirting detail, was fitted throughout.
Bespoke Corian laboratory benches with seamless tops were designed, manufactured and installed, to fit to each individual lab and incorporated integrated sinks, lever operated taps and splashbacks.
The overall project has delivered a functional, clean and modern working environment for the Open University students and staff alike.
